2010 US luxury brand sales monthly recap – February

March 2nd, 2010

luxury battle

Year-to-date sales figures:

1. MB: 30,028
2. Lexus: 29,304
3. BMW: 28,163

Lexus is a close second despite the massive Toyota recall fiasco (By the way, you can show your support to Toyota by signing the “I Support Toyota” petition). MB had a fabulous month which enabled them to take the lead, BMW remains at 3rd but still well within the striking distance. Seems like the Toyota recall is hurting Lexus but definitely not lethal, people are still buying Lexus products for their reliability, luxury and the legendary customer service.

Few interesting facts worth to point out…

1. Another bad month for the HS, a hybrid ES looks better than ever now?

2. The 7-series really took a charge in February, maybe the LS and S-class are showing their ages?

3. The Acura TL sales remain pathetic month after month, this might be the most epic fail in Honda’s history.

4. Audi’s sales number is steady but still isn’t where they want it to be with the big boys.

Following is the complete sales number break down for all luxury brands:

Brand February 2010 2010 YTD
Acura 8,939 16,071
Audi 6,216 12,726
BMW 15,100 28,163
Cadillac 9,273 17,713
Infiniti 7,041 13,752
Lexus 13,787 29,304
Mercedes 14,870 30,028

2010 US luxury brand sales monthly recap – January

February 8th, 2010

luxury battle

1. Lexus: 15,517
2. MB: 15,158
3. BMW: 13,163

Lexus remained strong among the luxury brands even under the massive Toyota recall that’s currently going on and MB is a very close second. As for BMW… after the “supposed-to-take-over-as-number-one” year in 2009, the question now is where is it headed with all the niche products like the X6M, X5M and the 5-series GT.

Few interesting facts worth to point out…

1. The HS sales still isn’t as well as Lexus had predicted, maybe some “spice” is missing for this car?

2. The LS sales went up compare to last year… facelift and the addition of the sports model are working?

3. BMW sold 5,418 3-series in january… this thing usually goes for 8,000 – 9,000 units per month just not that long ago. BMW losing its magic or people are getting smarter?

4. Acura sold 1,986 TLs, considering that the previous generation was challenging the 3-series for the top entry luxury sedan spot this is just plain PATHETIC. Still think the beak and ugliness isn’t hurting Acura?

Following is the complete sales number break down for all luxury brands:

Brand January 2010 2010 YTD
Acura 7,132 7,132
Audi 6,510 6,510
BMW 13,163 13,163
Cadillac 8,440 8,440
Infiniti 6,711 6,711
Lexus 15,517 15,517
Mercedes 15,158 15,158

No fold-down rear seat in the Lexus HS250h, big deal? You be the judge…

November 13th, 2009

Recently I ran across a post on an auto enthusiast forum about how the lacking of the fold-down rear seat in the HS250h is the deal breaker. The poster argued about how other hybrids like the Chevrolet Malibu, Honda Insight, Nissan Altima, Saturn Aura, Toyota Camry and Toyota Prius all have it so it appears Lexus is “cutting back” for not including the feature. Well, I did some “googearch” in my own spare time and found out the following…

Toyota Camry Hybrid:

In a closer look, this is the amount of access room (or the lack of…) that one gets from the fold-down seat with the batteries in the trunk:

Nissan Altima Hybrid:

According to about.com, in the Altima hybrid…

Hybrid battery eliminates a fold-down rear seat

Chevy Malibu Hybrid / Saturn Aura Hybrid:

The Malibu Hybrid is a mild hybrid, which means it’s a joke comparing to Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) system… Saturn Aura Hybrid uses the same system as the Malibu hybrid.

Sure in the picture it appears to be the Malibu hybrid has tons of access with the fold-down rear seat but the reality is that the battery pack is much smaller comparing to the Toyota/Lexus systems. The reason is due to the GM’s hybrid battery pack only powers the motor/alternator for engine assist as well as restarting the engine from AUTO STOP mode and does not independently driving the wheels like the Toyota’s HSD.

Toyota Prius:

Toyota Prius is a hatch back, which allows it to have more room in the trunk area. As you can see from the picture, in that area of interest, the cabin is also much taller comparing to the Camry hybrid.

Honda Insight:

Honda Insight almost has the identical shape as the Toyota Prius, so the reasons above can also be applied here.

My Lexus HS250h experience – Wrap up & Picture aplenty

November 9th, 2009

After living with the first ever Lexus dedicated hybrid for a week I have to say this is just not my kind of car. Sure the mileage is great for a midsize luxury sedan, sure the interior is solidly build, sure the powertrain is a magnificent piece of work but ultimately I just couldn’t see myself spending $40k on it. Like I’ve mentioned before the handling and ride just are not up to the normal Lexus standard and although beauty is in eyes of beholders I just couldn’t warm up to its styling. Even though the Lexus hybrid is really more, much more, than a glorified Prius but being as a Lexus owner I have to say that I’ve expected more from Lexus than this round of execution. In my honest opinion I truly believe that an ES hybrid with the same powertrain would be a much better car all around than the HS250h.

Enjoy the pictures below with the HS250h in Napa Valley and San Francisco:

My Lexus HS250h experience – Powertrain & Fuel Economy

November 2nd, 2009

The powertrain, in my opinion, is one of the few bright spots about the HS, the 2.4-liter Atkinson-cycle powerplant delivers healthy 187 combined HP through the smooth CVT transmission. Although the hand-off between the gasoline engine and electric motor is noticeable but it is probably the best in the hybrid world up to date. Lexus claim 0 to 60 in 8.7 seconds and according to my butt-lerometer is about just right, which is not bad at all for a hybrid that returns 35 MPG combined.

During the week that I had the HS250h I have put over 1,400 miles on the car, the distribution is about 2/3 highway and 1/3 city. According to the trip computer I have achieved over 34 MPG (34.3 to be exact) over the entire week, almost identical to the EPA numbers:

1101091506-00

Overall the HS is very impressive in the powertrain department, it is just a better suspension tuning away from being another Lexus masterpiece.

My Lexus HS250h experience – Handling & Ride

November 1st, 2009

g_ext1_HS-101During my 3-day, 1000-mile trip up north to San Francisco and Napa Valley, I’ve learned a lot about the HS’ ride and handling characteristics in both high speed and city crawling conditions. Following I’ll try to break down the pros and cons of the dynamics side of Lexus’ first ever dedicated hybrid.

Handling: During low speed one could easily mistaken the HS for one of the FWD sports sedans since the steering wheel has a nice weight to it, although the steering isn’t insanely sharp like the BMW and Porsche but it is precise nevertheless. The car felt confident on long and wide curvy roads as long as one doesn’t push it to the limit; once push it, heavy understeer will occur to remind you that this is not your typical sports sedan. Like I have mentioned before, the heavy weighed steering wheel will make you think this car has a whole different characteristic than the lighter and softer ES, and if you do think like that then you have been greatly mistaken. The low speed steering feel is what Lexus want you to think about the HS but high speed handling is what’s real about this car, the car felt floated and steering felt vague at high speed cruise just like its big brother ES. As matter of fact, due to the HS being higher, those characteristics sometimes felt even stronger on the Lexus hybrid.

Ride: At first impression the suspension on the HS felt much firmer than the ES, in some degrees it almost felt like the GS on smooth pavements. However, on uneven pavements the HS bounces just as much as the ES but due to the firmer suspension, it felt kind of weird. It is kind of hard to explain that through words because normally it’s easy to understand how a soft suspension to bounce up and down all over the place but for a firmer ride like the HS, one would expect a more stable ride. HS seems to be able to defy all that logic and deliver a firm and yet bouncing ride… Let me just put it this way, this is definitely not the best setup I’ve experienced in my driving life.

To sum it up, the HS is not one of the best Lexus executions in terms of ride and handling, to be a bit extreme, I have to say that it could be one of the worst from Toyota’s luxury division. It is not a bad luxury daily driver that delivers decent fuel economy; however, I’ll pick my IS350 or even the softer ES350 over the HS for long road trips without a second thought.

My Lexus HS250h experience – Sizing up

October 31st, 2009

During the whole week, the most frequent comment I got from the people who saw the HS in real life for the first time was:

“Wow, the car is much bigger than I expected, isn’t it smaller than the IS?”

So I always tell them that the HS is actually sized in between the compact IS and the almost-full-size ES, however the that’s-unbelievable look from their eyes always makes me chuckle. On paper the HS is 4.5 inches longer, 3.2 inches taller but about half inch narrower than the IS from the outside; from the inside the HS has almost full 4 inches more legroom for the rear passengers. It is kind of hard to picture all that from imagination so I took a few pictures with the HS side by side with my IS350 to make HS250h’s actual size more obvious:

HS vs IS_1

HS vs IS_2

It’s really amazing how Lexus is able to make to make the HS look A LOT smaller than it really is, whether that’s good or bad is entirely up to each individual…

My Lexus HS250h experience – Start up

October 27th, 2009

g_int15_HS-020When the power button is pressed, the car is in full silent except for the instrument lights lighting up; then after about 10 seconds the engine will fire up, it is a totally different experience than any ICE cars.

Also, the car will travel on full EV mode for a period of time if the speed does not exceed 15 mph. It seems a bit pointless on paper but is very useful when entering and backing up from garage.

My Lexus HS250h experience – First impression

October 26th, 2009

HSredHSred_intSo, after coupe months of waiting, I finally got my hands on a HS for the week-long test drive. I plan to write about the car whenever something interesting or informative pops up, kind of like Twitter, so stay tuned…

The one that was given to me is a base model with navigation, light maroon (Lexus calls it Metador Red Mica) exterior and tan interior. The first impression I got from this car is that it is definitely bigger than it appears in the pictures, especially when comparing to other Lexus models then one can clearly see that it is sized right between the IS and ES. The interior is very straight forward and pleasant and Remote Touch is fairly easy to use with virtually no learning curve (unlike those knobs on the Germans…). Overall the interior is standard Lexus and the leather padded center stack/console and top of the gauge cluster are definitely nice touch. However, I did spot a few cost cutting executions around the cabin, first the lower part of the door panels are made out of hard plastic, then I noticed that the reading lights for the front passengers aren’t LED and there are not reading lights for rear passengers at all. Obviously those aren’t deal breakers considering how Lexus was able to make such a high tech car at a very obtainable price.

Driving impression will be coming later.

Sales of the Lexus HS250h hit 10,000 in first month – boring sells?

August 20th, 2009

20090819p2a00m0na003000p_size5
According to Japan’s The Mainichi Daily News the sales of Lexus’ first ever dedicated hybrid hit 10,000 units in the first month of its release, shattered the original sales goal, 500 per month, by a wide margin:

Orders for Lexus’ first dedicated hybrid, the HS250h, reached 10,000 units in its first month, smashing its sales target of 500, parent company Toyota Motor Corp. said.

The waiting list for the HS250h is now six months long. Advance orders stood at 3,000 units.

The hybrid sedan can reach 23 kilometers to the liter, a fuel efficiency on par with that of Toyota’s Vitz compact. The basic model has a sticker price of 3.95 million yen.

This news got me thinking… Most people were putting put down this car when it was first released, especially the so called “enthusiast” or “purist” crowd, including most automotive journalists. Why? Because the HS250h does not run the 0-60 “in the 4s” nor does it pull a lot of Gs in the skidpad like some of their beloved sport sedans. Simply put, this is a “boring” car, it looks boring, drives boring and probably even smells boring according to those people.

However, I’ve alway been think otherwise. There are way too many people out there who don’t care about how fast to 60 the cars can run or how many G the cars can pull, they just want a simple luxurious, fuel-saving A to B commuter. Guess what, the HS250h is just a perfect car for that purpose and this report is the best evidence to show that Lexus really knows their customers and knows them well.

Kudos to Lexus, bravo!

• Hybrid Car for Forward-Thinking Luxury Consumers, to Start at $34,200
• Best Combined EPA MPG Rating of Any Luxury Vehicle in the U.S.
• 70 Percent Fewer Smog-Forming Emissions Than the Average New Car
• First Vehicle to Offer Lexus Enform™ with Safety Connect™

TORRANCE, Calif. (July 20, 2009) – Lexus today announced the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the new HS 250h hybrid, which has the best combined EPA mpg rating of any luxury vehicle in the U.S.

The 2010 HS 250h, Lexus’ first dedicated hybrid and the fourth offering in its lineup, is available in standard and Premium models. The standard version will have an MSRP of $34,200, while the Premium model will carry an MSRP of $36,970. They will arrive at dealerships in late August. The MSRPs do not include a delivery, processing and handling fee of $875.

Both models, which emit 70 percent fewer smog-forming emissions than the average new car, received EPA-estimated ratings of 35 mpg city and 34 mpg on the highway for a combined 35 mpg utilizing regular 87-octane gasoline . The HS 250h has the best combined EPA mpg rating of any luxury vehicle in the U.S. and its MSRP is nearly $10,000 less than one of its entry luxury sedan segment competitors.

“The creation of a dedicated luxury hybrid vehicle speaks volumes about Lexus’ commitment to our customers and hybrid technology,” said Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president and general manager. “Forward-thinking, well-informed entry luxury consumers are seeking a social statement and technology with a clear benefit in their next car. HS 250h delivers this with its unique package and modern luxury that fits their advanced lifestyle.”

Standard features on the HS 250h include leather-trimmed seats; 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with eight-way power-adjustable front passenger seat; a 10-speaker, 137-watt audio system with a six-disc CD changer, a subwoofer and center speaker; Bluetooth® for phone and music streaming capabilities; integrated subscription satellite radio (includes 90-day trial); USB/ iPod® connectivity operated via steering wheel controls or the display screen; and 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels. The HS 250h incorporates a standard class-leading 10-airbag Supplemental Restraint system and front active head rests.

The HS 250h Premium model adds heated/ventilated front seats trimmed in semi-aniline leather; 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels; rain-sensing windshield wipers; heated electrochromic exterior mirrors; genuine wood interior trim; and a new memory system that allows individual driver settings for seat, powertilt-telescopic steering wheel, outside mirrors and air conditioning settings to be recalled automatically by individual key fobs.

The HS 250h utilizes Lexus’ first four-cylinder gas engine and the latest hybrid system to take advantage of the company’s continuous engineering advances to help minimize emissions and maximize fuel economy. The twin-cam Atkinson-cycle engine with Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i) alone has an output of 147 horsepower (hp). In combination with the hybrid drive motor, the HS 250h generates 187 total system hp. HS 250h has nearly zero evaporative emissions.

The HS 250h features four drive-modes: Normal, Power, Eco and EV; which can help enhance efficiency and involves driver and car interaction. Each drive-mode changes the rate of throttle opening for a given throttle-pedal angle.

The HS 250h’s forward-thinking interior design implements extensive bioplastic material, or Ecological Plastic, for parts of the interior upholstery. It covers approximately 30 percent of the interior and trunk helping to result in a reduction of carbon emissions by approximately 20 percent over the estimated life of the vehicle.

The optional sixth-generation navigation system features Lexus’ exclusive Remote Touch controller with user-adjustable haptic feedback. The innovative controller, similar to a computer mouse, eliminates the need for touch screen controls, allowing the pop-up navigation system screen to be mounted further up the center stack and away from the driver. This helps the driver benefit with a clear, high-resolution screen, improved site lines and reduced eye movement. The navigation system also comes equipped a rear-view camera. Also on navigation-equipped HS vehicles is the availability of XM® Sports and Stocks, a new service that is included with an XM® satellite radio subscription.

HS 250h Premium models can add an optional Wide-view Front Monitor to help enhance the driver’s ability to see in certain areas around the front of the vehicle by sending images to the navigation system display. Standard HS 250h models can also add an optional Touring Package; heated front seats; LED headlamps with Adaptive Front-lighting System, Intelligent High-Beam with headlamp washers; and 18-inch alloy wheels. The optional Technology Package, available only on the Premium model, includes the Heads-Up Display (HUD); Lane Keep Assist (LKA) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW); Pre-Collision System with dynamic radar cruise control; Driver Monitor and Intuitive Park Assist. HUD projects a miniature display on a small portion of the windshield in front of the driver, helping to reduce eye movement to see frequently viewed information such as vehicle speed, turn-by-turn navigation arrows, drive-assist warnings, audio information and Touch Tracer (sensors on steering-wheel switches will show an image of switch layout in the HUD). Another new feature to the Lexus line, LKA, helps drivers stay within their chosen lane and works in cooperation with the LDW function and the dynamic radar cruise control.

Other optional equipment available for the Premium model includes a Mark Levinson® 5.1-channel Premium Surround Sound system with 15 speakers and 330 watts, and the Park Assist Package. An all-new telematics system, Lexus EnformTM with Safety ConnectTM, available by subscription will also be available on HS 250h. Complimentary one-year trial subscriptions of Lexus Enform and Safety Connect are included with all new HS 250h purchases. One-year renewal subscriptions to Safety Connect alone will be available for $139.95 and to Lexus Enform with Safety Connect for $264.90 per year. Multi-year subscriptions will also be available. The Lexus Enform and the Safety Connect response center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – every day of the year.

Safety Connect, the cornerstone of the services, is available on both non-navigation and navigation-equipped HS 250h and offers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Enhanced Roadside Assistance, which adds GPS data to the already included warranty-based Lexus roadside service.

Lexus Enform, available only on navigation-equipped vehicles, includes all of the Safety Connect features and builds upon them with the premium services of Destination Assist and eDestination. Destination Assist agents are available via the on-board cellular equipment and can help drivers find a specific address, a business by name, or a type of business (e.g., gas station, movie theater, etc.), and even Zagat®-rated restaurants, and then send the coordinates to the navigation system for routing. With eDestination, drivers can go online via LexusDrivers.com to save and sort destinations in up to 20 folders, each holding as many as 10 destinations. Then drivers can send the locations – up to 200 at a time – to their vehicle, where they will be available for download into the navigation system. Online, drivers can create personalized location names (e.g., “Favorite sushi,” “1 PM Appt,” “Kids’ doctor,” etc.) and even list notes about their saved locations – all helping them see exactly the information they choose in the vehicle.

Lexus Insider™, a complimentary, opt-in service available without a subscription on all navigation-equipped HS 250h vehicles is launching at the same time as Lexus Enform. This feature offers in-vehicle audio casts that provide owners access to useful vehicle tips and event information, and insights into exclusive owners’ benefits – all designed to further enhance the Lexus experience. As part of the all-new Lexus EnformTM navigation platform, the HS 250h also features XM NavTraffic®, XM NavWeatherTM , and XM® Sports and Stocks services. XM NavTraffic® and XM NavWeatherTM are available via individual XM subscriptions while XM® Sports and Stocks is included with an XM® Radio subscription. XM services offer a 90-day trial.
